It’s difficult to truly understand a number like $5 trillion dollars. It’s more than the U.S. government spent during fiscal year 2019. It’s more than the 2019 gross domestic product of Germany, the world’s fourth biggest economy. A statistic like $5 trillion is hard to fathom, but it’s also hard to forget, particularly when it relates to a real and growing problem.
